Much of the Illinois River system will be shut down during the summer of 2020 for maintenance and upgrade work on six of the eight locks and dams. “That’s a pretty narrow window, but we’re going to try to make the negative impact to the navigation industry as small as we can,” said Tom Heinold, chief of operations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Rock Island District.
The planned closures in 2020 include:
– LaGrange Lock & Dam, Versailles.
– Peoria Lock & Dam, Creve Coeur.
– Starved Rock & Dam, Ottawa
– Marseilles Lock & Dam, Marseilles.
– Dresden Island Lock & Dam, Morris
– Brandon Road Lock & Dam, Joliet
“We are doing these closures up to 120 days,” Heinold said. “We’ll strive to make it as short of a closure as we possibly can. But the major rehabilitation at LaGrange is driving that time range.”
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Rock Island District, will host an informational webinar on the Illinois Waterway Consolidated Closure 2020 on Nov. 5 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
